4. Goal Seek

Lesson 4 of 16
Task 1 of 2
  1. Find the loan amount in B1 for which the payment in B5 is exactly $1,800.

Lesson theory

Goal Seek solves the reverse problem: "what must X be for the formula to give the result I want?".

Your mortgage payment must not exceed $1,800 a month. How large a loan can you take?

Click Goal Seek (Data › What-If Analysis › Goal Seek): "Set cell" is the cell with the formula (the payment), "To value" is the target, and "By changing cell" is the input number (the loan amount). The changing cell must hold a number, not a formula.
