8. Nested IF and IFS

Lesson 8 of 25
Task 1 of 2
  1. In C2:C8, assign a grade by the scale using nested IFs.

Lesson theory

When there are more than two outcomes, you put one IF inside another:

=IF(B2>=90,"A",IF(B2>=75,"B",IF(B2>=60,"C","F")))

Conditions are checked in order, so start with the strictest one.

Excel 2019 and Microsoft 365 add IFS, which makes this easier: =IFS(B2>=90,"A",B2>=75,"B",B2>=60,"C",TRUE,"F"). The last pair, TRUE,"F", means "in all other cases".

The scale: 90+ → A, 75+ → B, 60+ → C, lower → F.
